Principal's Message
Tēnā koutou. To all Students, Parents, and Whānau,
As Term 3 comes to a close, I want to acknowledge the hard work, resilience, and dedication shown by our entire school community. This term, we’ve seen tremendous growth in both academic achievements and personal development. From sporting victories to cultural performances and classroom successes, each of you has contributed to making our school a place of excellence and belonging.
As we head into the final term, I encourage everyone to maintain consistent, everyday attendance. Being present each day ensures students make the most of their learning opportunities and finish the year strong. Let’s work together to achieve this!

Have a restful and enjoyable break.

Boys Football Tour
The Lytton High School Boys' Football team completed a successful tour of the Eastern Bay of Plenty during the first week of September. The primary aim of the tour was to compete against other high schools and foster teamwork and camaraderie through a variety of outdoor activities.
On the pitch, the team displayed a relentless attitude and impressive technical skills. They began with a 4-1 victory over Whakatane High School, followed by two thrilling 3-3 draws against Rotorua Lakes High School and Western Heights High School. Jakeb Te Kani-Brown was the standout performer, scoring four goals, including a hat-trick against Whakatane. Late goals in both drawn matches ensured the team remained undefeated throughout the tour.
Off the field, the players were exceptionally well-behaved and courteous. All students engaged enthusiastically in the team-building activities and gained valuable lessons. White water rafting was a highlight, with one of the three rafts flipping while navigating the 6-meter waterfall on the Kaituna River. Other activities included ten-pin bowling and mountain biking.
This year, we bid farewell to two of our team leaders, George Bodle and Logan Gibson, who have both made significant contributions during their time at Lytton High School. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours.
A special thanks goes to Cam Cairns, a former team member and current goalkeeping coach, for his support during the tour. Lastly, we extend our gratitude to Coach Breeze Parsons for his outstanding tactical guidance and passionate coaching this year. He has dedicated countless hours to developing the team and bringing out the best in each player.
We look forward to the 2025 season!

Pathways
Building Academy - Our students have been busy building a two bedroom house for Kainga Ora. This opportunity and experience is invaluable for these students. They are gaining skills and knowledge that will transition them into the construction industry.
A big "Ngā mihi" to our local TUMU Gisborne for supplying our Building Academy students with their winter PPE sweatshirts.
MITO Students - Our Motor Trades Industry students have been hard at work. They are completing various different microcredentials along with Work Experience placements. Our students are working in a range of motor industries ranging from small motors, passenger vehicles through to heavy diesel trucks.
Gateway - Our Gateway students for Term 3 have been very busy, with 18 students completing various work experience placements at local businesses and organisations. Gateway is a programme designed to give students real life experience in an industry they may want to pursue a career in. They will also gain credits and qualifications related to their work placement to show their competencies. A common problem for students when looking for employment opportunities, is that they do not have any work experience. This programme allows students to gain valuable experience and knowledge to better prepare them in that process.
We also want to say a huge thank you to all the organisations and businesses that support us with this kaupapa.
Careers Department - Our students have had the opportunity to meet with some of the amazing Air New Zealand crew this term. Rawiri who is a Flight Attendant had our students captivated from the moment he arrived. An awesome presenter, he spoke about life on board, international travel, and what it takes to be successful within his chosen career.
We also took a group of students to the Gisborne Airport to meet with Andy Price, an Air New Zealand Captain on board the Airbus A320. Andy has an amazing career flying and spoke in depth to our students about it. The commitment, persistence and the rewards of the job were highlights of his talk.
Forklift Course - Term 3 saw a group of students successfully complete their Forklift Licence through school. This is a great opportunity for our students to gain skills and knowledge that will aid them in their career options.
A second group of students successfully completed their Forklift Licence through school. With the end of the year fast approaching, this is a perfect qualification to have for a holiday job. Well done boys.
First Aid Course - In Week 5 of Term 3 a group of 12 students successfully completed a two day First Aid course on site in the hall. Having a First Aid Certificate is great for your CV. These students have also learnt some very valuable life saving skills.

Tahatū - Guiding our students into the future
For a lot of students choosing a direction in life can be a challenging time. TEC (Tertiary Education Commission) have created Tahatū, a new interactive careers website designed to give rangatahi & whānau a new way to explore careers advice and information.
Lytton High School has been selected to be a part of a pilot program amongst schools across Aotearoa, to use this programme to provide inspiration and information about how to get into study, training and work. Craig Wilkie, our school's Careers Advisor has been working with selected Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 students to explore careers and study pathways using Tahatū.
As Tahatū goes live in 2025 you will see this valuable resource be used more widely within the school. Keep an eye out for whānau information and more details around how we will be utilising Tahatū to help set our rangatahi up for success.

Year 11 Outdoor Ed, Trip. September 9-11th, 2024.
On Monday we left for our trip to Guthrie Smith Arboretum and Education Centre, at Lake Tutira.
It started out with a 3 hour drive, instantly followed by our first activities the minute we arrived. We split off into boys and girls to keep the freaks apart. As the girls went canoeing, the boys did high ropes.
“As I was coming down the rope I felt like Lady Gaga from the wrecking ball music video.”
The day after we arrived the boys and girls switched activities, the girls doing the ropes, and the guys doing canoeing. This was a team building activity with all of us working a different part of the rope to keep the person doing it from falling to their demise.
We did a 3 hour 10km walk to Bell Rock together. Everyone's perspectives of whether it was worth it varied, from :”this sucked” to “The view was worth the walk.” (Not the rock, the rock was not a bell.)
One of our highlights was the night walk, where we walked a track with only the stars to guide our path, and the scream of others to lead the way. The next night we re-grouped and roasted marshmallows at the bonfire.
Overall we are speaking on behalf of all 29 participants who would all do it again, we took home our new stories, perspectives and experiences.

OH HELL YEAH TŪ MANAWA ACTIVE AOTEAROA YOU THE GOAT!!!

Te Whare Whai Hua Careers Focus
The week of August 26th was our Careers Week. We used student voice to gather a range of speakers to come and chat about their careers and their journeys into them. The speakers were inspirational and had many of our māmā and our kaiako considering options outside of their current focus. A huge mihi to all our speakers who gave up their precious time to kōrero.
Careers Day was a blast! It was so great to have māmā who have previously been at Te Whare Whai, and are out in the world doing their thing coming in to speak to us. It was very empowering to hear their stories on their road to doing what they love; the trials they faced being young mums and dads and how they overcame obstacles. It was cool to get a little look into different careers as well, expanding our options and stirring our curiosity in regards to what we want to do in the future.
Thanks to the Te Whare Whai Hua tutors for arranging our careers day.

Exciting Highlights from Rītana's 2024 Student Council!
The 2024 Student Council at Rītana is in full swing! With successful events like Love Bunny fundraising, Civvies Days, and charity initiatives already completed, our Term 3 highlight—Culture Week—truly stood out.
Designed by the Rītana Student Council, Culture Week celebrated the vibrant diversity of our Lytton High School community. The week was filled with a range of activities for both students and staff.
Monday kicked off with lunchtime workshops that explored the rich history of arts and crafts from around the globe. On Tuesday, our lunchtime Cultural Performance event showcased incredible talent, with students representing their heritage through song, dance, and entertainment. We enjoyed captivating performances from Sāmoa, Tonga, the United Kingdom, France, and Aotearoa New Zealand, with special congratulations to our winners. Wednesday was a colorful display of cultural pride during our ‘Cultural Dress Up’ day, where students donned traditional attire or celebrated cultures they admire. Finally, Friday concluded the week with a trans-national cultural quiz held in Learning Advisory classes, where Kowhai triumphed and secured the coveted house points!
The Student Council is eager for what lies ahead at Rītana, so stay tuned for more exciting events! Congratulations to our Council members for exemplifying the true spirit of Lytton Aroha, Ako and Aspire!

VISITING WRITER TO RĪTANA.
This year Rītana had the privilege of hosting established writer, Anne Kayes, to do a presentation and writing workshop with our students. The initiative was inspired by Jacque Cornelius, a member of the school’s Elements Writing Group. Anne spoke about her experience of the 1981 Springbok Tour of Aotearoa and the process of writing a novel with approximately 100 students, including a small group from Gisborne Girls’ High School.
After Anne’s presentation, she gave a creative writing workshop in the library with those who enjoy the art of storytelling. In previous years, the Elements Writing Group has attended writers’ festivals because they understand the value of engaging with established writers, so it was extra special this year that Rītana were able to select and host a writer right here at our school.

WINNER OF THE RĪTANA NATIONAL POETRY DAY COMPETITION.
‘Squelching / It tightens around my brain’ were the first lines of the winning poem for this year’s Rītana Poetry Competition in recognition of National Poetry Day on Friday 23 August. Organised by the Year 11 ENGUY class, the students set parameters around the word count, language features and theme of this year’s competition. The theme of “Earworm,” (noun) a catchy song or tune that runs continually through a person's mind was open to interpretation by the students. The winner of the competition had the privilege of having morning tea with their favourite teacher. A big thank you to the staff of Tauawhi Men's Center and members of the Mana Wahine group for judging this year’s entries. HIGHLY COMMENDED in the senior section went to Ariana Stuart and the HIGHLY COMMENDED in the junior section went to Ruby Fergusson, with the OVERALL WINNER being Year 11 student, Emerald Akroyd. However, all entries were thoroughly enjoyed by the judges.

Board of Trustees Student Representative
Congratulations to Cadence Evans for becoming the new Student Rep on the Board of Trustees.
Standing for election as the student representative on the school board might have felt a bit daunting, but there’s plenty of help and support available to you.
As well as having a voice on how your school is governed, being a school board member will provide valuable knowledge and experience for your future – it will look great on your CV!

What’s happening in Angitu?
Another busy term, for the students at Angitu Rongomaiwhiti - has seen them plant raised sensory gardens, share an exciting inter-school playday at Tolaga Bay Area School and Kahukuranui and fundraise for Daffodil Day.
SENSORY GARDENS: The goal for our students was to plant a garden and encourage them to create a space that would stimulate their senses ‘sight, smell, taste and touch’. Colourful flowers, herbs, shrubs and grasses were planted by them to create a calming space where they can interact, taste and harvest the herbs and vegetables from the garden. Angitu students are looking forward to visits from butterflies, bees and sharing the space with other students.
We were blessed to have our raised timber gardens built by our Ritana Building Academy. The result was more than we expected. Thank you so much students and teachers for your quality build. Whakawhetai ki a koutou mo to mahi.

INTER-SCHOOL PLAY DAY: On the 10th September, staff and students at Rongomaiwhiti travelled to Tolaga Bay for an inter-school day of fun and inclusive events for neuro diverse students. We shared a day of activities including music, karaoke, giant bubbles, amazing playgrounds, flying fox and a disco. Staff and students were treated to a scrumptious morning tea and a lunchtime sausage sizzle. Our students have differences in how they experience sensory activities; however, the overall setup of activities by staff and students at Tolaga Bay Area School catered for every sense and experience. AMAZING!
The day was super enjoyable for the students - that they could take their time and explore and take part in all activities. Tristan, Vision, Noah and Jacob sang Karaoke and played the drums. Giant bubbles was a hit with Ella and Vision and of course, Umuariki likes anything high and it moves - a day that our students will remember. The smiles said it all!

DAFFODIL DAY: Our unit decided to get creative by wearing yellow, sharing yellowish food and bringing a koha for Daffodil Day. A fantastic and worthwhile activity - not to mention the yummy shared food.
Maria took two students to meet Amanda, Manager of the ANZ Bank (major sponsor of Daffodil Day) to receive the money raised. Thank you Amanda for your time to meet with our students. We know that the money will be used to help people living with all types of cancer in our Gizzy community and communities across New Zealand.

Year13 Snowboarding at Mt Ruapehu.
On the 15th of September, a group of 17 Year13 Academic PE and Outdoor Education students departed for Mount Ruapehu for the 2024 Snow Trip. On arrival Mount Ruapehu was a bare rocky mountain with minimal snow. Our day proceeded with a 1km hike up Te Maunga on a dirt track to the Ski Racers Lodge. Day 2 was spent in Happy Valley learning to Snowboard and Ski. At 2pm, we were blessed with a snowfall which unexpectedly stayed longer than we wanted. It was still a great day, with lots of successful runs down the mountain, and everybody learning, and having lots of laughs. Day 3 we were woken up to blasts of wind slamming against the ski lodge. The weather had changed dramatically and the mountain had been completely covered in a lot of fresh snow. Sadly, this meant the ski fields were closed. Darren and Matt took this as a challenge to create a new course with jumps for the class and members of the public to use during the blizzards. On Day 4, the snowstorm had calmed down. Luckily, Happy Valley was re-opened and covered with a fresh coat of snow. The snow had also covered the 1km hiking track from our lodge to Happy Valley, meaning we were allowed to snowboard down to Happy Valley. Day 5,was pack up day. We discovered the school vans had been buried in snow; after an hour of shovelling snow and sourcing snow chains we were able to leave the mountain, completing our 2024 snowboarding trip. Our thanks to Mrs Crane & Mr Hooper for making this a trip to remember.

CACTUS 2024
After 7 gruelling weeks, 5.30am starts three days a week, 8 students made it through 2024 CACTUS Programme. Congratulations to Cassidy Clarke, Dalton Clarke, Symphony Hira, Te Maioha Olsen, Zyanja Rudge, Kyle Tupara, Mitchell Van Zyl, and George Bodle. We would like to thank the JN Williams Memorial Trust, Koka Beanie, Kayla Tane, Rangi Kingi and others from the NZ Police who were committed to pushing our students over the line to graduate after a full on Longest Day on Saturday 14th September. The Longest Day started at school at 5.15am, the students were taken in vans to Heipipi Park, where they ran to Waikanae Beach, had an early morning dip in the ocean doing press ups & pushups, and then ran wet back to school via the subdivision. At school they had a game of Bubble Soccer, and then were vanned out to MacLaurins Road, where they undertook a Mud run, crawling through culverts, and muddy creeks. On completion of the Mud Run, they then ran over the farm and back to school via Haisman Road. They were then transported to Gaddum's Hill for a tense game of Paintball. Game over, they then gathered to run with Logs on their shoulders, back down Gaddums Hill, along De Latour Road, Rutene Road, and along the Esplanade, completing that leg back at Heipipi Park. Graduates were then presented with their CACTUS Shirts by theBoard of trustees Chairperson. After this 5 minute break, they then completed the last leg with a pack run from Heipipi Park to Derby Street along Gladstone Road, picking up a fire engine, and dragging it 500m along Gladstone Road from Derby Street. This was the highlight of many and an opportunity for the parents, whanau & community to get behind the students, and with sirens blaring, lots of tooting from passing cars and whanau cheering them along the fire engine came to rest outside Animates. What a huge day, and an even bigger commitment that was shown by these students. Certificates were then presented to the 8 students during the Graduation Dinner back at school, with delicious food prepared as a fundraiser for the Ki o Rahi Tournament Team. Ka mau te wehi, kia kaha Ritana.

Three weeks later Kayla Trowell registered to pair with Gisborne Boys High School student Sean Haskins at the NZ Secondary Schools Indoor Bowls Pairs Championship held in Auckland, resulting in winning the Gold. Rugby: For the last game of the season the U15 Boys Turanganui a Kiwa, comprising students from Lytton High School, Manutuke and Campion College, were hosted at Uawa to play the East Coast U15 team. The game was played in good spirit, both sides having some good phases that stretched from one end of the field to the other. The Turanganui a Kiwa team had a big lead at half time. However, after the restart, the Coast delivered intensity on defense, stringing together some good movement of the ball amongst the backs and forwards. It was hard to keep the score with both teams playing exciting rugby with plenty of tries, however the conversions made the difference. The Coast winning 48 – 41.

Softball: Stella Perano reported on the National representative softball event she took part in: “This year I was fortunate enough to be named in the New Zealand ISA Open Women's Team which involved travelling to Australia for a tournament earlier in September.
This was a massive step up for me but I gained so much valuable knowledge from this experience. At first it was extremely nerve wracking and scary but once I got past the nerves I was able to express myself and show my true skills. I think the main thing I took away from this experience is to always ask questions. You will never know the answer to something if you don't ask and personally I think it is how you gain knowledge. All in all, I am incredibly grateful to everyone who sponsored me and supported me on my journey to Australia and to the people who continue to support me. One last special shout out to my parents who do whatever it takes to get me where I wanna be.”

Squash: For the first time ever, Lytton High School was represented at the New Zealand Secondary School Squash Team Champs in Wellington. 48 High Schools throughout New Zealand came together for a 3-day, fun-filled, challenging tournament. Congratulations to Lane Bartlett, Stella Perano, Samantha Hall and Adellah Berge for representing our kura, their efforts and dedication towards weekly training; and positive team sportsmanship throughout the trip. Facing strong competitors in Tauranga Girls College, Trinity Catholic College Dunedin and Ruapehu College, they met their match on the last day with Sacred Heart High School New Plymouth and Marlborough Girls High School. The team played with exceptional determination, and all managed to secure a win, super proud of them all. Adellah had the game of the tournament against Lily Bishop from Sacred Heart winning 11-9 in the 5th game! The team is appreciative to all who made this trip possible. Massive shout out to the sponsors, Fortuna/Surf City Squash, Heavy Equipment Services, Elite Fire Protection and Elite Electrical Installations. Incredible generosity received. Also a big thank you to Nicola Bartlett for being a fabulous Team Manager, Ryan Majstrovic for attending last minute, and Daniel Newman for providing support where needed. With the success of this trip, the courage shown by the players, and the connections made, this trip is a trip to remember for the 2024 Lytton High School Squash Team.
