Te Ao Tangata | Social Sciences encourage students to observe, wonder, and be curious about people, places, and society, and to take an interest and engage in social issues and ideas. Through Social Sciences, students develop understanding, knowledge, and skills concerning social, cultural, economic, and political processes. This enables them to contribute to and participate in society as critically informed, ethical, and empathetic citizens with a concern for the well-being of communities and a commitment to a fair society for all. Central to this in Aotearoa is an understanding of the responsibilities deriving from Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles of engaging in power-sharing and honourable relationships, and of respecting tikanga and the natural environment.

In Te Whare Tikanga-Ā-Iwi, students experience a wealth of subjects in the Junior and Senior Schools: Geography, Classical Studies, Business Studies, and History. Te Whare Tikanga-Ā-Iwi is designed to expose students to issues and developments on a local, national, and international level. Through Social Science processes, practices, and skills, students learn how to research, evaluate the integrity of sources, communicate, reason, argue, and make decisions about social action.They come to understand that people have different experiences and perspectives and that recognising and drawing on this diversity helps them thrive as community members and citizens. 

With pathways from Junior Social Studies in Years 9 & 10 into Senior Business Studies, History, Geography, and Classical Studies in Years 11, 12 & 13, Lytton High School has a vast offering of subjects that explore the world through research, Education Outside the Classroom, creativity, and perspectives.
